Bilbao , Spain , 1 February 2007 . Gamesa has subscribed two new contracts, awarded through an international tender, with the New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), for the construction of two wind farms in Zafarana , on the shores of the Red Sea , involving the installation of 241 MW. The contracts have been signed today in Cairo by Mr Samir Hassan Executive Chairman of NREA , and the Chairman of Gamesa, Mr Guillermo Ulacia, in a ceremony that was also attended by the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy , Mr Hasan Ahmed Yunes, and the Spanish ambassador in Egypt , Mr Antonio López Martínez .

The Chairman and CEO of Gamesa, Guillermo Ulacia, has stressed the importance of these two new trade deals with NREA, ¿which reinforce the bonds of trust between both organisations and Gamesa's long-term commitment to one of our target markets¿.

Egypt is an area of major potential within the energy sector, and particularly in wind power , with plans afoot for 20,000 MW.

The scope of these contracts, drawn up as turnkey arrangements , covers the supply of 284 wind turbines corresponding to the Gamesa G52-850 kW model, as well as their running and maintenance. This will involve a total power output of 241 MW. Assembly work on the wind power installation is set to begin in the second half of 2008.

These projects will also have a local component, as the towers for the wind turbines are to be built in Egypt , with subcontracting of the civil engineering and electrical work for the wind farms and their accesses and roads.

The subscription of these two new contracts, worth more than 279 million euros, strengthens the long-term commitment between Gamesa and NREA . The latter is the main customer for the Gamesa G5X-850 kW product range, and it has so far been involved in the subscription of contracts for installing 405 MW in Egypt .

From an environmental perspective, the wind turbines supplied to these two new wind farms in Zafarana will generate a clean power supply, avoiding the atmospheric emission of contaminating substances. Specifically, the annual output of the 241 MW generated by these installations will replace 51,815 Tonnes of Equivalent Oil (TOE)/year, so avoiding the release into the atmosphere of 361,500 tonnes of CO 2 /year.
